NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Joe Vitt coached to the very last minute, sprinting down the field and screaming for a timeout as his team moved into scoring territory.

Meaningless preseason game? Hardly. The New Orleans Saints' interim coach gave his team everything he had in a 10-6 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night. It may have been meaningless to most, but it was full of import for Vitt, who now starts a six-week suspension for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal.

"I just told the guys it's been my honor and my pleasure and it really has been," Vitt said. " ... The only person who's dreading this more than anybody is my wife."

Vitt believes he delivers the Saints to their Sept. 9 opener against the Washington Redskins in the best shape possible. Not only are they as healthy as any Saints team he can remember, every player is on the same page following a tumultuous offseason that's brought scandal and storms and every kind of distraction imaginable.

"I'm proud of the way they went through OTAs," Vitt said. "I'm proud of the way they went through training camp. I'm proud of the way they stuck together. And this week, we got displaced yet again and we had not one man late for a meeting. Everybody came together here and got the work done that we had to get done."

That showed against the Titans. Vitt scratched 26 players, and the reserves left on the field outplayed Tennessee, which held out a few stars but played most of the regulars along with quarterback Jake Locker.

Also taking on a larger role in the game was Aaron Kromer, the next interim coach in line. He'll be New Orleans' field leader for six games and Vitt said his role against the Titans expanded quite a bit and included game management issues like replay challenges.

Though coach Sean Payton has been gone since the spring when he began serving his one-year suspension, Vitt doesn't feel the coaches have deviated from his plan one bit.

"This coaching staff has been like a board of directors," Vitt said.

Now it's Kromer's turn to take over as chairman. But first, the Saints will return home Friday and check in on their families and homes after Isaac caused flooding and damage in Louisiana. They'll have Saturday and Sunday off before gathering for a meeting Sunday night that will serve as the official start of the regular season.

Rather than rip the team apart, Brees says the situation has only made it stronger. The Saints played five preseason games this year, something that usually drives players nuts. But in retrospect Brees believes pulling the team together so early helped settle everything for the players.

"I guess in spite of everything that's going on, it was probably nice to come to camp early and hunker down and just focus on football," Brees said. "For a lot of us, we just want to get out on the field as quickly as possible. I've really watched the team come together over the last six weeks through some pretty interesting circumstances, especially as of late."

Nothing new in letter from mining vice-president

Dear editor,

Ms. Waterman?s letter (Record, Aug. 29) doesn?t offer new information; it simply reflects the plethora of form letters we?ve all received and sites EA processes found on websites we?ve thoroughly researched.

She assumes we?re prejudging this government?s EA process for Raven Coal when in fact; we?re using structured and established guidelines in the Environmental Assessment Act to measure the EA agencies? performance on managing and guiding Raven coal's legal requirements.

Two years ago I asked the CEAA for evidence of environmentally responsible coal mining examples, anywhere in the world, and nothing has ever been produced.

If Ms. Waterman thinks we ought to respect the long-standing arsenic and sulfate problems due to Quinsam Coal?s failure to deal with concerns expressed by scientists, and that it?s safe industry practise to have 30 times higher levels than provincial guidelines, I?d like to know what Environmental Assessment Act she?s reading?

And, where?s this evidence of revenues from the mining industry going into health and education? Government cuts to health and education over the past few years don?t support this fairy tale.

The only rich in the history of coal mining on Vancouver island was experienced by the very few who left a dark legacy for many taxpayers today to pay the bill to clean up their toxic mess left behind, like the Union Bay Coal Hills at a price of $17 million.

Perhaps Ms. Waterman should do her homework and earn the right to comment on our situation because, unlike Ms. Waterman who sits in an office in the big city, we?re here on the front lines, living and breathing this nightmare of a proposal.

Her life, livelihood and lifestyle will never be adversely affected by the looming threat of this Raven coal mine, which has already negatively affect our lives and wasted our time.

The unprecedented amount of opposition to Raven Coal exists because we are very well-informed of the process and the history because it?s our lives that are at stake.

We live here, this is our home and it?s clear Ms. Waterman is advocating for something written for ads and brochures, far from our reality.

Marijuana activists seek vote to block Los Angeles dispensary ban

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Marijuana activists in Los Angeles, the hub of America's medical cannabis industry, said on Wednesday they will submit a petition of 50,000 signatures to block a municipal ban on pot dispensaries from taking effect next week.

The move comes amid a widening dispute over pot shops in California's most populous city. Residents complain dispensaries are a nuisance that draw riffraff, but the store owners say they serve patients with serious diseases like cancer and AIDS.

"We believe that this total ban would not allow for safe access for some of the city's sickest patients," said Rigoberto Valdez, vice president of a local union and a member of the Committee to Protect Patients and Neighborhoods.

The committee said it would turn in 50,000 signatures on Thursday, which would immediately put the ban on hold while officials check if more than 27,000 valid signatures are there to force a March 2013 referendum. Until that vote, the city would be prohibited from enforcing the ban, officials said.

Los Angeles has an estimated 1,000 dispensaries. They have multiplied quickly in recent years, even though pot remains illegal under federal law and the U.S. government has cracked down on several cannabis shops in southern California.

A 14-0 vote last month by the mostly liberal Los Angeles City Council to close down the medical marijuana dispensaries represented a significant blow to the industry in a state where voters in 1996 became the first to allow the drug as medicine. But officials had expected the industry to fight back.

The committee challenging the ban is made up of organized labor for dispensary employees, the shops themselves and patients, said Valdez, vice president of United Food and Commercial Workers local 770. The group supports reducing the number of dispensaries in the city to 100.

Seventeen states and the District of Columbia allow medical marijuana. Voters in Washington state, Colorado and Oregon will decide in November whether to allow recreational use of pot.

Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar, the author of the ordinance to ban dispensaries, said he proposed it due to nuisance complaints from residents and dispensaries selling to recreational users faking a medical ailment.

"I've got parents complaining to me that they're walking with their kids down the street, and there's marijuana smoke either coming from the dispensary or people smoking it on the street outside," Huizar said.

Medical marijuana trade group Patient Care Alliance and 11 patients filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court this month seeking to block enforcement of the ban. A judge has not ruled on that request from the group, which is separate from the activists planning to submit signatures on Thursday.

TSX closes near two-week low, hurt by oil, banks

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian stocks dropped sharply on Thursday as investors pared back expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve will signal a new round of economic stimulus, brushing off surprisingly robust earnings from three of the country's big banks.

All ten of the benchmark index's main sectors were lower ahead of the much anticipated speech by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke at a meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.

"The market is expecting that we won't necessarily get anything definitive tomorrow out of Jackson Hole, or if we do, that it's already reflected in equity valuation levels," said Paul Taylor, the chief investment officer of fundamental equities at BMO Asset Management.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> closed down 123.14 points, or 1.03 percent, to 11,886.65. It was the biggest one-day fall for the index since early July.

The index at one point hit 11,875.05, its weakest level since August 15.

Limp data on the U.S. labor market coupled with signs that consumer spending remains steady added to the pessimism as it neither pointed to a robust recovery nor a bleak environment in which the Fed would be forced to act.

"In some ways you hope that economic data is weak enough that it forces the Fed's hand. The risk is that it's a little bit better than awful and therefore the Fed is not compelled to intervene," Taylor said.

ENERGY LEADS DECLINE

Toronto stocks were led lower by a 1.5 percent decline in energy shares that followed a drop in U.S. crude prices. U.S. crude fell as oil companies assessed damage after Hurricane Isaac's trek through the region.

Financial stocks were among the biggest weights even though three big Canadian banks reported better-than-expected results and dividend increases on Thursday.

The sector had enjoyed a two-day rally after Bank of Nova Scotia and Bank of Montreal upped their dividends and beat profit estimates earlier in the week.

However, Bank of Nova Scotia fell 2.4 percent to C$52.30 after it said late on Wednesday it would buy ING Groep's Canadian online bank for C$3.1 billion.

Toronto-Dominion Bank

was down 1.1 percent at C$80.65 on Thursday even though it narrowly beat expectations for quarterly profit and raised its dividend by more than expected.

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce dropped 1.4 percent to C$75.35 even as it said profit rose 42 percent on higher lending volumes.

But Royal Bank of Canada , the country's largest lender, bucked the trend, rising 0.66 percent to C$54.96 after it announced a surprise hike in its dividend on the back of a 73 percent rise in profit.

"On the whole, the core Canadian banking franchises are still relatively stable and intact," said Gareth Watson, vice-president for investment management and research at Richardson GMP.

"Credit quality is not deteriorating too quickly, although in this environment it's not improving too markedly either," he said.

Analysts said investors were also looking ahead to a European Central Bank meeting next week at which President Mario Draghi is expected to flesh out his plans to buy euro bonds. His hints at such a move in August was credited with helping steady global markets.

"Europe is the problem, and that's where we need some solutions for other places around the world to feel more comfortable," Watson said.

Infection with a common virus may increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes in older adults, a new study from the Netherlands suggests.

?

In the study, adults ages 85 and over who were infected with cytomegalovirus were about twice as likely to have Type 2 diabetes compared with those not infected.

?

Cytomegalovirus is a type of herpes virus found in 50 to 80 percent of adults over age 40; most people experience no symptoms of the infection.

?

The findings suggest that cytomegalovirus infection plays a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes in the elderly, the researchers said. However, the study found an association, not a cause-effect link.

?

While the findings are interesting, researchers need studies that follow people forward in time to find out whether the virus could cause Type 2 diabetes, said Dr. Rifka Schulman, an endocrinologist at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

?

In addition, because the study was conducted in elderly people, the findings may not apply to other populations, Schulman said.

?

For now, well-established risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and lack of exercise should be considered the primary causes of Type 2 diabetes, she said.

?

Linking diabetes and infection

Previous studies have linked cytomegalovirus and Type 1 diabetes, but studies looking at the virus and Type 2 diabetes have had inconsistent results. One previous study looked at a generally younger group of adults than the new study ? between ages 45 and 84 ? and found no link between cytomegalovirus infection and Type 2 diabetes.

In the new study, the researcher analyzed information from 549 elderly adults in the Netherlands.

About 80 percent were infected with cytomegalovirus, and 15 percent had Type 2 diabetes.

?

About 17 percent of those infected with cytomegalovirus had Type 2 diabetes, whereas 7.9 percent of those without the virus had diabetes.

?

The findings held even after the researchers took into account factors that could affect the results, including participants' gender, income, education, smoking status and number of medications.

?

Behind the link

The researchers speculated that cytomegalovirus may predispose people to diabetes by harming cells of the pancreas. The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that is critical for getting sugar (glucose) into cells. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes desensitized to insulin, and the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to compensate.

It's also possible that Type 2 diabetes impairs the immune system, and as a result, makes individuals vulnerable to cytomegalovirus infection. However, this explanation is not as likely, because people are often infected with cytomegalovirus in childhood, the researchers said.

?

It may be that cytomegalovirus infection increases diabetes risk only after years of infection, which could explain why earlier studies in younger adults did not find a link, the researchers said.

The study was published today (Aug. 27) in the journal Immunity and Ageing.

Seen Through a Glass: Susquehanna Brewing knocks me out

Susquehanna Brewing is open and running, has been for a few months, and I always like to give a brewery a few months before trying the beer...but this was getting ridiculous: two good friends were on the brewing side -- Jaime Jurado and Guy Hagner -- and I hadn't made the time to get up the road two hours?to see this operation? That I knew was amazing? Seriously, the technical side of it is off the hook...but I'm getting ahead of myself.

We went on vacation in the Poconos in late July, just about a month ago, and I contacted Jaime and Guy to see if there was any place I could try their beers as we were on our way up, then stop by the brewery or a distributor and pick up a sixtel for the cabin. Jaime graciously invited me to come tour the brewery, and said he'd get me some beer. So my mother and I went up that Saturday afternoon, and Guy gave us a tour.

Wow. First eye-opener was the mill, where the barley husks are largely separated from the grist before wetting in the mash tun, what Jaime called endosperm mashing integration. The husk is sent to a 'husk case' above the lauter tun, and dropped in "only immediately prior to...being required for its important role in refining mash." Jaime said SBC is the 7th brewery in the world to do this (they also do it at Trumer in Berkeley, which Jaime oversaw in his role with Gambrinus).

The 50 bbl. BrauKon brewhouse includes a dedicated decoction kettle (used to make the Goldencold). But the big deal is that the main brew kettle uses...well, as Guy said, you've seen a calandria, right? And the external calandria, like Victory has? This is something different. "This" is the PDX system, which circulates the wort outside of the kettle and injects live, high-pressure food-grade steam into the flow. It actually goes supersonic, which is a key part of the whole thing: the turbulence created by that gets the heat into the wort in an amazingly efficient way. The PDX saves a ton of energy (along with the cool, super-efficient smart boiler Jaime spec'd for the brewery (the same kind Flying Fish has in their?new brewery, BTW, and don't you ever believe that Casey Hughes isn't a very bright boy)), and, well, it sounds really cool, too; "Like a jet plane taking off," Guy described it. Susquehanna was the first brewery in the world to have it designed into a new brewhouse from day one (Shepherd Neame in the UK were the pioneers on retrofitting it; SABMiller's using one in their big brewhouse in South Africa, Radeburger has one, and Miller is also testing one on their pilot brewery.

Truth is, Jaime put an incredible amount of energy and material-saving tweaks and equipment into this brewery. He told me that he realized that he wouldn't get too many more chances to completely design a brewery with this kind of freedom in his career, so he wanted to make this one right...and the energy savings and carbon footprint were very important to him. That's why the brewery has the short bottles, not longnecks, for instance: they weigh 1.4 oz. less, and have a 20% smaller carbon footprint. The labels are 30% recycled paper (post-consumer), will soon be 50%, and that should increase every year.

It's not all about energy, though. Guy showed us an incredibly complex Moravek BC-30 Carbonator, the thing that puts the CO2 into the beer as it's packaged, and it measures the temperature and gravity of the beer to precisely match the pressure to the job to have it consistent...but I loved what Jaime said about why he got it: "I selected the BC-30 carbonator/nitrogenator because it produces beer with superior bubbles...strange but true." Extremism in the defense of superior beer is no vice, Jaime. He also put in a massive hopjack (BrauKon's second), it looks like something from the powerplant of a nuclear sub.

Okay, so all that...how was the beer? Pretty frickin' awesome.?The walkaround bottles of Goldencold that Guy gave us for the tour (yes, my mother, too, and she asked for another!) reminded me of something Travels with Barley?author Ken Wells said:??One thing you can say about lagers: the good ones don't make you work very hard to like them." This was one of the best American-brewed hellesbiers I've had, which is amazing considering how new the brewery is...and not amazing, considering how much experience Jaime and Guy have between them. Yes, Guy, because Jaime gives Guy full credit for formulation on this one.

The sample of 6th Generation Stock Ale we got? Not so good, flat, a bit harsh...but that got better. After some more chatting, Guy told me to pull my car (heavy-laden with vacation crap) into the loading bay, and put three cases of Goldencold and a low-fill sixtel of Stock into it. Yeep. "You get samples, right? These are samples!" I'll be honest, I was looking at that sixtel of Stock and thinking...I'd just as soon have more lager and skip the Stock, but, okay, I'll smile. So we thanked him, and drove off to the north.

Once we got to the cabin, I stocked the fridge with a case of lager, and iced down the keg of Stock Ale...and tapped it. Much better. (Jaime told me later that the keg in the brewery was tapped for at least 3 weeks...I suspect a new regimen of beer care has since been instituted.) The stock was sweet, bitter, floral and citrusy, and had a wonderfully fresh/bready character to it. We did serious damage to it and finished it off Thursday night.

So about two weeks later, Jaime emailed me: they're having their first?beer dinner at Lucky's Sportshouse...in Wilkes-Barre...would we like to come? Well, it is almost 2 hours' drive, but Cathy's been wanting to meet Jaime for years, and wanted to see Guy again, so yeah, we went. It wasn't just Susquehanna's first beer dinner, it was Lucky's, too. I wasn't optimistic.

Boy, was I wrong. Lucky's is definitely a sports bar, lots of screens and a high ceiling and open floor plan, but the food was quite a notch above sports bar: all prepared on-site, freshly-made food. But again, I'm ahead of myself: we got glasses of the new SBC Oktoberfest. Very nice, dry malt character (not the caramel sweetness you get in too many American fests), and quite enjoyable indeed. Clearly these guys know their way around a lager.

They know how to have some fun, too. That extremely red beer you see here is a blend of Ofest and Goldencold, dosed with coffee, peaches, raspberries, and orange oil. It was dry, fruity -- the orange oil really made the other fruit aromas burst out of the glass -- with notes of coffee and dry cocoa. Very nice, and startlingly red.

So, about the food. The plate you see above was the main course: two "honking big pieces of meat" (as Uncle Jack always describes the main courses of the dinners at Monk's Cafe) in the form of perfectly done pork schnitzel, with broccolini and a bed of mild sauerkraut (and a dressing of deliciously caramelized onions). The pork was done through, juicy, with a crisp, thin coating that wasn't oily/gross...very nice, especially given the number of plates -- about 50 -- that they were serving. (Two of those 50 were Chip The Beer Guy and his girl (fiance!) Diane, who Cathy also got to meet; good times as always, Chip!) That was actually one of the things we noted, and Chip said it first: the food all came out on time, simultaneously, and it was all hot and ready to go. Nice coordination for their first beer dinner!

We'd started with passed pieces: battered cod bites, some green bean tempura-kind of thing (that was real good!), coconut shrimp, and...I can't remember the fourth thing. I DO remember the breads that came afterwards, because we all devoured them, great fresh-baked stuff, and Cathy took some home. We got a beer cheese soup next, and it had little bits of ham in it, nicely done, and not too gruel-like; I hate that.

Last was the bananas foster you see above: great whipped cream with that, too. The whole dinner was excellent, easily the best food I've ever had at a sports bar. I'm hoping that Susquehanna comes to Philly soon (I know Memphis Taproom got some samples), because we're just about out of Goldencold...

'True Blood' finale leaves a big bloody mess

This is it. Season finale time. And if you've been watching "True Blood" for five seasons, you know everything can go to hell in a hand basket in a mere hour. And it sure did. (Spoilers ahead!)

Quick summary: Bill (Stephen Moyer) is a religious nut. Eric (Alexander Skarsgrd) is awesome. But which fan favorite died in the first few minutes?

WHAT WE LEARNED?

Goodbye Awesome: R.I.P. Russell Edgington (Denis O'Hare). He was the absolute coolest. Psychotic and power hungry, Russell obviously had to die, but we will miss his perfect speeches and (sometimes) irresistible Southern charm. After some fairy light rays and quick action, Eric finally got his centuries-old vengeance. Eric saves Sookie (Anna Paquin) yet again.?

Father of Fairies: It was only last week that Andy (Chris Bauer) slept with Maurella (Kristina Anapau) and found out that he was going to be a father. In one of the more hilarious ridiculous scenes, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), Arlene (Carrie Preston) and Holly (Lauren Bowles) are all on hand to witness the miracle of life and Maurella's interesting reaction to birthing and post-labor. Surprise! Andy has four babies and it's the father's job to raise them. Peace out!?

Bill Is the New Lilith: Bill's arc throughout this season has been his path to religious fanaticism. He's slowly and methodically weeded out the competition for top dog in this nuthouse. His final action was poisoning Salome (Valentina Cervi). And if you thought Bill's crazy death explosion was shocking, so was his ascent out of the blood pool.?

Shift and Rescue Operation: Adorable puppy Emma needs some rescuing. While Sam (Sam Trammell) tries to appeal to Bill's non-psycho side, Luna (Janina Gavankar) skinwalks into Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian). Good plan, no? No! Steve Newlin is in a bit of hot water for killing some frat boys and has to go on TV to talk himself out of trouble. Meaning Luna does. But remember this shifting into humans is bad for shifters. Season six consequences, y'all.?

Rightful Place: There's a new sheriff in town. Alcide (Joe Manganiello) finally takes his place as pack leader. He's hot and good at making speeches -- he'll definitely do well in his new position. Presuming he doesn't go power hungry like Bill.?

Rewind Moment: After some longing looks and a little banter, Tara (Rutina Wesley) and Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) finally make out. And there was a very brief Pam and Eric reunion. Presuming everyone survives to next season, we need more of our favorite Maker-Progeny. Pam and Eric have been separated far too long this season, it makes us hurt deep in our hearts.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple's $1 billion court win against Samsung is translating into a much bigger jump in its market value.

Apple shares were up $11.98, or 1.8 percent, at $675.26 in morning trading Monday.

That boosts Apple Inc.'s market capitalization, already the highest in the world, by $11 billion to $633 billion.

In opening trading, Apple shares hit $680.87, a new all-time high.

Late Friday, a nine-person federal jury in Silicon Valley found that some of Samsung's products illegally copied features and designs from Apple's iPhone and iPad.

Investors appear to be betting that the verdict will make it harder for Apple rivals to ride on the iPhone's coat-tails. In particular, analysts said it's likely to slow the growth of Android, Google Inc.'s operating system for smartphones. It's used by Samsung, HTC, LG and Motorola, now a division of Google.

Samsung Electronics Co. shares fell 7.5 percent in Korean trading.

Apple could ask the judge to stop sales of infringing Samsung products in the U.S. Samsung, the world's largest maker of smartphones, could still keep selling its products unchanged in the rest of the world. But the U.S. is the world's largest market for smartphones, and Samsung is likely to want to remain there.

"We believe this verdict could lead to Samsung delaying near-term product launches as it attempts to design around Apple's patents," said Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley.

While Apple has been the driving force in the smartphone market since the iPhone was launched in 2007, it only commands 19 percent of the worldwide market share, accord to research firm IDC. The high price of the iPhone keeps it out of consumer hands, particularly in emerging markets. That's left an opening for Android, which now accounts for 64 percent of smartphones sold.

UBS analyst Amitabh Passi said that it's "very unlikely" that Apple could stamp out Android by repeating the U.S. legal victory in the rest of the world. The cellphone carriers like having several suppliers to choose from, and would not accept dominance by Apple, he wrote Monday.

Shares of HTC fell 1.9 percent on the Taiwanese stock market. Google shares fell $13.80, or 2 percent, to $664.83 in U.S. trading.

Meanwhile, U.S.-listed shares of embattled Finnish phone maker Nokia Corp. jumped 24 cents, or 7.8 percent, to $3.32. That was the highest level for the company since May.

Nokia has gone against the grain and based its new smartphone line not on Android but on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Phone. That operating system is substantially different from Apple's, and hasn't landed in its legal sights. However, sales of phones using the software have been slow, imperiling Nokia's turnaround efforts.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney now has Secret Service agents assigned to her at all times. The move comes as her husband is set to formally receive the GOP presidential nomination later this week.

Mitt Romney has had Secret Service protection since January.

It's standard practice for the wives of presidential candidates to receive such protection as Election Day approaches.

Agents accompanied Ann Romney to a supermarket near the Romneys' New Hampshire vacation home on Sunday morning.

15-year-old Lydia Ko wins in Canada

COQUITLAM, British Columbia (AP) ? Lydia Ko won the Canadian Women's Open on Sunday to become the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history and only the fifth amateur champion.

The 15-year-old South Korean-born New Zealander closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory. She broke the age record of 16 set by Lexi Thompson last September in the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama, and is the first amateur winner since JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdine's Invitational.

"To break another record, or being in the history, it's amazing, and it's always awesome to be able to play with the pros," Ko said.

In January, Ko won the New South Wales Open in Australia at 14 to become the youngest player to win a professional tour event, a mark broken by 14-year-old Brooke Henderson in June in a 36-hole Canadian Women's Tour event in Quebec. Ko also won the U.S. Women's Amateur two weeks ago in Cleveland.

"I didn't cry after this one," said Ko, but (after) that one I did cry," Ko said, referencing the U.S. Women's Amateur. "Yeah, to me, U.S. Amateur is a big event, and obviously this is a huge event as well. But still, as an amateur winning one of the biggest amateur events, I feel like it was a better win ? even though this one was awesome."

Ko finished at 13-under 275 at The Vancouver Golf Club, pulling away with birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine. She opened with consecutive 68s and shot a 72 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.

Inbee Park shot a 69 to finish second.

Park chipped in for birdie on the final hole, and Ko closed with a bogey to make it closer.

"The pressure she was handling is really amazing," Park said. "I'm really happy for her. It's great for her career ? and I think I was just lucky to get the winner's check today."

U.S. Women's Open champion Na Yeon Choi, Chella Choi and Jiyai Shin tied for third at 8 under. Na Yeon Choi had a 73, and Chella Choi and Shin shot 71.

The glove Ko wore in the final round will be displayed in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

"To have something that's mine to be up there, it's amazing, and it doesn't come down or anything," she said. "So it will always remain there, and it'll be a good memory. It's been an awesome week."

Ko plans to remain an amateur and go to college in the United States, possibly at Stanford.
