Forget NCAA, bet on College of Cardinals

Tom Rauen treats the papal election no differently than he would a sport.

As a Roman Catholic and the owner of Envision Sports Designs, a sports paraphernalia company in Dubuque, Iowa, he noticed right away that the conclave would coincide with college basketball's NCAA tournament. Instead of cranking out commemorative T-shirts, he and his company's "bracketologist" designed a bracket for office and parish pools.

Based on the bookmakers' favorites ? along with a few famous churchmen from Dubuque, dead and alive, thrown in for good measure ? they charted out the Sweet Sistine (16 contenders), divided them into regions (including the Archdiocese of Dubuque), and invented a mock March Madness showdown on Twitter. The bracket got 15,000 views in its first 24 hours online, Rauen said.

"If he had announced it in July or something like that, it might not have caught on," Rauen said. "But being so close to the NCAA tournaments and all these college tournaments, it's something that people are getting excited about."

Participants can narrow down the Sweet Sistine to the Ecumenical Eight, the Flagellant Four and the Diocese Duo. Those two finalists must duke it out for Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church.

Rauen is hoping for a Cinderella story. At the center of his bracket he put New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

"Having an American in the top seat as pope would really build and strengthen the connections American Catholics have toward the religion as a whole," he said.

On Friday night, Mrs. Obama joined Mr. Fallon ? both were dressed as suburban moms ? for a dance routine called the ?Evolution of Mom Dancing? ? a take-off on Judson Laipply?s wildly popular video ?Evolution of Dance? (more than 200 million views so far).

Steps included "Go Shopping, Get Groceries", "Driving the Station Wagon?, "Oh My God, I Love This Song", and ?Where?s Your Father (Get Him Back Here).?

Michelle Obama: 10 quotes on her birthday

Social media and the blogosphere went nuts. ?The first lady demonstrated an uncanny ability to make the lamest dance moves look cool,? wrote Daniel Politi on Slate.

One tries to imagine Mamie Eisenhower or Pat Nixon doing "The Sprinkler." Bette Ford or Hillary Clinton (before she became a US Senator and Secretary of State) maybe, but probably not either of the Bush first ladies.

Fallon suggested a Michelle-Hillary ticket for president in 2016. But the first lady said she had her eye on another post-White House job. ?I hear that when Jay Leno retires that 'The Tonight Show' position is going to open and I'm thinking about putting my hat in the ring,"?she joked.

The President?s dancing skills inevitably came up.

"How about Barack, is he a good dancer?" Fallon asked.

"You know, I give him a B," Mrs. Obama said, tactfully. "His dancing is right here in the pocket. He's got like three good moves. But they're all right here," she said while dancing with her hands by her hips.?

Dancing with Fallon is part of an effort to promote Mrs. Obama?s "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign, which marked its third anniversary this month.

Besides the appearance on "Late Night," Mrs. Obama discussed the initiative while in New York City during segments taped for broadcast Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" and Thursday on "The Dr. Oz Show," the Associated Press reports. Next Wednesday, Mrs. Obama embarks on a two-day promotional tour, with stops in Clinton, Miss.; Chicago; and Springfield, Mo.

For the second anniversary of "Let's Move," she and?Fallon?turned the East Room of the White House into a playground. They did pushups, twirled hula hoops, and competed at dodge ball and tug-of-war before the first lady triumphed over the comedian in a climactic potato sack race.

CleanTech Investment: Flywheel Energy Storage

temporalEnbridge Inc. is emerging as major corporate venturing partners in the Canadian cleantech scene. It has already acquired more than $3 billion in renewable energy assets ? a combination of solar, wind, geothermal and run-of-river hydro. It has invested in concentrated solar PV manufacturer Morgan Solar and hydrogen tech firm Hydrogenics. It has pursued innovative waste-heat capture at its compressor stations in combination with fuel cell technology. Now, it is throwing its financial support behind flywheel storage innovator Temporal Power.

Temporal, based in Mississauga, Ontario, announced this week it has completed a $10 million Series B equity financing, with Enbridge Emerging Technology Inc. one of the lead investors along with Northwater Intellectual Property Fund (which was also lead investor in the company?s Series A financing in July 2011). Northwater Capital, it should be noted, is the money behind NRStor, a company with plans to develop Canada?s first energy storage park. NRStor, using Temporal Power flywheels, has already won a contract with Ontario?s Independent Electricity System Operator, which will see the flywheels being used to provide regulation services on the provincial grid. Annette Verschuren, former CEO of Home Depot Canada, is heading up the NRStor initiative.

Temporal Power describes its flywheel technology as a ??quantum leap forward? because of its capability of storing 50 times more energy than most flywheels and enabling a power output that is five times higher per unit than its nearest grid-scale competitor. ?Using its proprietary flywheel energy storage technology, Temporal Power?s scalable power storage plants offer utilities and power generation companies the ability to deliver efficient and cost-effective fast response capabilities for balancing energy and improving power quality on the electrical grid,? the company said in a statement.

Globe and Mail today has a nice summaryof the various energy storage initiatives going on in Ontario ? from conventional pumped storage to Temporal?s flywheels and advanced compressed-air energy storage.

Offices of 2 GOP Congressmen Get Suspicious Letters

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. ? Officials say the offices of two Virginia congressmen received letters with a suspicious powder inside, though the material does not appear to be hazardous.

Virginia Beach Fire Battalion Chief Tim Riley says the substance found in a letter received Friday at Rep. Scott Rigell's office posed no immediate threat. A news release issued by Rigell's office says no staffers were hurt, and that the subject and intent of the letter were not known.

In Chesapeake, Rep. Randy Forbes' office also reported receiving a letter containing a powdery substance. Capt. Scott Saunders of the Chesapeake Fire Department told WTKR-TV that the material appeared to be wax residue from the envelope seal.

Neither Republican was at the offices when the letters arrived.
