Ice dancer Caleb Niva of Bellingham and teammate Gianna Buckley of Seattle will head to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January.
Niva and Buckley earned silver medals on Nov. 11 at the 2013 U.S. Figure Skating Pacific Coast Sectional in Provo, Utah. The ice dance team competed at the juvenile level in three dances: willow pattern dance, fiesta tango pattern dance and free dance.
The sectional the duo earned silver medals in represents competitors from Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii.
Niva, 14, is a longtime skater at the Bellingham Sportsplex and currently trains with Buckley in Verett and Mountlake Terrace.
Niva and Buckley will compete at nationals in Omaha, Neb.
JONES PLACES FIRST AT KETTLEBELL EVENT
Brad Jones of Bellingham placed first in his division on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation National Championships in Detroit.
Jones simultaneously lifted both 24-kilogram (53-pound) kettlebells in each hand over his head 72 times in a 10-minute session.
The division Jones won was open to all ages.
HOLIDAY BASKETBALL CAMP
The Raider Holiday Basketball Camp will be Wednesday, Dec. 19, through Thursday, Dec. 20 at Bellingham High School.
The camp will be coached by Bellingham boys' basketball coach Ken Crawford. The camp is for boys and girls grades 3 through 6.
Each three-hour session (9 a.m. to noon) will focus on skill development and game situations as well as individual instruction.
Cost is $35 and includes a T-shirt.
